How did the project start?

I attended a presentation on social networking and Web2 by Roger Coathup of 21 Thoughts which inspired me to create a social networking presence for Latimer Hinks Solicitors.

I talked Judith Middleton (Family Law partner at Latimer Hinks) into starting up a blog. I then started my own blog – Social Networking Guineapig to diary the progress of Judith’s blog, my ability to learn new jargon and marketing methods presented by blogging. The blog is also used to give an extra “push” to press releases and events which Latimer Hinks are involved in.

What options did you consider?

I considered Yahoo360 as an initial place to start the blog but found that Blogger provided more of what was required - the ability to add widgets, blidgets and bookmarking facilities as well as a way to monitor traffic and promote the blog.

I also now use Facebook, StumbleUpon and Google reader and many other social sites to “share” any posts and press releases.

What help and expertise did you receive?

I contacted the “experts”. I took the time to ask “bloggers” about blogging. I posted questions on sites such as LinkedIn. Questions were answered by people from all over the world - they were all very friendly and willing to share their knowledge.

Did you face any challenges or learn any lessons?

Yes, how to attract an audience. Starting a blog is easy, ensuring people read it – a little more difficult. Feedburner (through Blogger) provides a way to optimise, promote and monitor blogs. Claiming your blog on Technorati and setting up an RSS feed is also a must. I use Social Networking Guineapig to diary these lessons learned in the hope it helps others.

What are the outcomes and how has it improved your business?

When monitoring Latimer Hinks Solicitors website statistics I can see how many hits have been directed from my blog. I can also see where social bookmarking has been successful.

The blog provides a way for Latimer Hinks news, events and press releases to reach a wider audience than a static website is able. Blogging is a cost effective way to deliver news and educate readers instantly.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue with the Social Networking Guineapig experiment. To ensure all publicity generated via Latimer Hinks is publicised through blogs to provide a wider target audience and to try to keep up to date with the ever changing social networking scene

“I'm really pleased Andrea's blogging has been such a success.

She really deserves to win this award, not just for her writing, but also for the way she's embraced the daunting but exciting world of web2.0, and integrated into such a diversity of Social Networks.

I take it my cheque will be in the post!”
