How did the project start?

There was an obvious gap for a comprehensive service covering what is a growing sector. The equestrian world and allied industries form part of a multi-million pound industry world wide, which as indicated is expanding. The equine industry has traditionally been fragmented but expansion is driving the demand for good management and co-ordination and for professionals able to manage equine services, products and events effectively and efficiently.

In addition in DEFRAs consultation report (April 2005) ‘The Future of the Horse Industry’ it was highlighted the importance Government is now giving to the sector. This portal fits into at least four of the major themes outlined in that document:

• Enhance the horse industry’s image and increase participation
• Boost the economic performance of equestrian businesses
• Raise skills, training and standards
• Encourage sporting excellence

The British Equestrian Federation is also pushing to involve more people in riding and equestrian pursuits at grass roots level.

What options did you consider?

Do Nothing and let someone else do it.
Do something to kick start the project that eventually would be taken over by someone else with more time and money.
Get on with the project and develop to the best of my ability within the restrictions of holding down a full time job and looking after my family.

What help and expertise did you receive?

Very little help and advice, because it doesnt generate a decent income. I have managed to produce, update and research all of the information on my own.

Did you face any challenges or learn any lessons?

The fact that this isnt a priority area within regional agendas and affects a fairly small proportion of the regions population.

What are the outcomes and how has it improved your business?

The site has now been successfully up and running for 5 months and is regularly updated with news, events and information. This is down to contiuned committment from myself in making this a success. This has also been achieved with very little money and no advertising, so the greater benefits of improving in these areas would inevitably lead to and enhanced organisation and service.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue to promote as best I can the website and services on offer across the region. Upgrade the site with additional functionality over time, look at expanding the information/services/offerings and aim to create linkages with other equestrian and linked organisations to maximise exposure to what the region has to offer.
